This art project is a joint enterprise between the Crewe to Manchester and South East Manchester Community Rail Partnerships. The two partnerships, between them; cover five lines and 26 station friends groups. The lines provide crucial commercial and cultural links across the south and south east of Manchester from the city centre southwards to Crewe and towards Derbyshire and the Peak District National Park.
The artwork has been created by local Stockport Artist Eamonn Murphy, Eamonn’s aim is to capture the spirit of local communities that use the lines. The artwork features well-known local buildings and landmarks that speak of that particular community’s past or present and the people that make up that community. The artwork is created in a style that evokes travel in times past when travel was an adventure.
At the very heart of Community Rail is the community. The wider community, more than the rail, is the growing focus of Community Rail. This project is very much about the people, the places and their joined history. We want this art to encourage people to learn about their own localities and communities but also to explore the lines to learn about their neighbours and to take advantage of what is on offer by them and to continue along the lines, discovering as they go; from the busy centres out to the plains of Cheshire and up onto the wild moors of the Peak District.
